In an interview with the “Rahand” (Dimension) program, hosted by Kurd Channel, directed by journalist Shamal Targhib, I had the opportunity to discuss one of the important topics in political and social life: leadership and how leaders are formed.

In this conversation, I tried to address the question, “Are leaders born, or are they made?” from both a scholarly and experiential perspective. I explained that leadership is not simply a natural characteristic or a matter of personal charisma; rather, it is a process of learning and development in which education, experience, environment, society, and institutions all play important roles.

I also emphasized the distinction between power and genuine leadership. Holding a position, possessing authority, or having followers does not, by itself, make someone a good leader. Genuine leadership is measured by integrity, responsibility, justice, service to society, and respect for human dignity.

An important part of the conversation focused on the role of institutions in educating and developing future leaders. No society or movement should depend solely on one individual. Instead, it needs a system capable of developing new cadres and generations based on merit, critical thinking, responsibility, and meaningful participation.

In relation to the political and historical circumstances of Kurdish society, we also discussed how leaders often emerge in response to social and political needs. Qualities such as vision and clear goals, courage, moral integrity, service to society, strategic thinking, resilience, and institution-building are essential components of strong leadership.

Ultimately, my central message was that a strong society is not one that simply has a strong leader; it is one that has the capacity to educate, develop, and produce capable leaders for the future.
