What was covered in our  Seminar: Harnessing AI for Education and Mental Health
Prepared by Dr. Soraya Fallah

On Sunday, September 14, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM (Pacific Time), the UNA-USA San Fernando Valley Chapter and the American Association of University Women (AAUW) co-hosted a virtual seminar on Zoom titled “Harnessing AI for Education and Mental Health.” The event featured distinguished speaker Dr. Marina A. Badillo-Diaz, LCSW, and was facilitated by Dr. Soraya Fallah, Vice President of UNA-USA San Fernando Valley Chapter.

The program began with welcoming remarks from David Tuckman, representing UNA-USA, and Ginny Hatfield, AAUW board member and past president. They highlighted the mission and work of their organizations, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the intersection of technology, education, and mental health. Dr. Fallah then welcomed attendees and connected the session to two United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 3 — Good Health & Well-Being and SDG 4 — Quality Education, noting AI’s potential alongside its ethical and equity challenges.

Dr. Fallah introduced the featured speaker, Dr. Marina A. Badillo-Diaz, founder of MABD Consulting, respected educator at NYU, Columbia, Hunter College, and LSU, and author of The AI Social Worker blog. With her background as a school administrator and counseling director, Dr. Badillo-Diaz has trained more than 3,500 social workers across the United States and Canada.

Her presentation combined expert insights with a live demonstration of AI tools. She illustrated how AI can be responsibly applied in both education and mental health while inviting participants to consider critical issues such as confidentiality, academic integrity, the evolving relationship between youth and technology, and the environmental costs of AI, including its significant energy and water consumption.

The session fostered rich dialogue, with many therapists raising questions about safeguarding patient privacy in the age of AI. The discussion highlighted both the promise of AI to advance mental health and education, and the responsibility to navigate its ethical and social implications carefully.

This seminar was a successful collaboration between UNA-USA San Fernando Valley and AAUW, uniting community members to reflect on how artificial intelligence can help advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals while maintaining equity, responsibility, and integrity.

  1. Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a transformative role in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of quality education and mental health. In education, AI-powered systems enable personalized learning experiences by adapting content to individual student needs, learning pace, and performance. Intelligent tutoring systems, virtual assistants, and automated assessment tools help improve accessibility and engagement, especially for students in remote or underserved regions. AI also supports educators by analyzing student data to identify learning gaps and suggest targeted interventions, making education more inclusive and effective. Generative AI Projects for Final Year

In the field of mental health, AI is being used to provide early detection, support, and intervention. Chatbots and virtual mental health assistants can offer 24/7 support, helping individuals manage stress, anxiety, and depression. Machine learning models can analyze behavioral patterns and detect signs of mental health issues at an early stage, enabling timely care. Additionally, AI-driven platforms can bridge the gap in mental health services by making support more accessible and affordable. Medical Image Processing Projects By integrating AI into education and mental health systems, societies can move closer to achieving sustainable development goals focused on well-being, equality, and quality of life.
