Gender Dynamics in Advocacy and Education: Celebrating International Women’s Day Through Research

Today, I had the opportunity to present (glance through) my research to doctoral candidates in the Doctoral Dissertation Seminar, where I explored the experiences of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) populations from Middle Eastern, North African, and Southwest Asian (MENASWA) families within the U.S. special education system. One slide that truly stood out to me highlighted the role of gender in shaping parental advocacy, school engagement, and the perception of disability.

My research reveals that gender dynamics play a crucial role in how mothers and fathers navigate the special education system. Mothers often take on the primary responsibility of advocating for their children's educational needs, yet they face cultural and institutional challenges, including stigma, microaggressions, and stereotypes. Notably, the data from my study shows that female family members were more receptive to being interviewed and participating in research, as they viewed the study’s implications as beneficial for their future.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, I find it particularly relevant to highlight these findings. Women's voices are essential in shaping inclusive policies, fostering stronger family-school collaborations, and improving accessibility to resources for students with disabilities. Recognizing and addressing these gendered experiences is critical in ensuring equity in education and beyond.

پویایی‌های جنسیتی در حمایت و آموزش: گرامیداشت روز جهانی زن از طریق تحقیق و پژوهش

امروز فرصتی داشتم تا به صورتی گذرا پژوهش خود را در سمینار پایان‌نامه دکتری ارائه کنم. در این پژوهش، تجربیات خانواده‌های دارای تنوع فرهنگی و زبانی (CLD) از مناطق خاورمیانه، شمال آفریقا و جنوب غرب آسیا (MENASWA) را در نظام آموزش ویژه ایالات متحده بررسی کردم. یکی از اسلایدهایی که برای من برجسته بود، نقش جنسیت در شکل‌دهی به حمایت والدین، مشارکت در مدرسه و درک ناتوانی را نشان می‌داد.

پژوهش من نشان می‌دهد که پویایی‌های جنسیتی نقش مهمی در نحوه تعامل مادران و پدران با نظام آموزش ویژه ایفا می‌کنند. مادران اغلب مسئولیت اصلی حمایت از نیازهای آموزشی فرزندانشان را بر عهده دارند، اما در این مسیر با چالش‌های فرهنگی و نهادی از جمله انگ‌زنی، رفتارهای تبعیض‌آمیز و کلیشه‌ها مواجه می‌شوند. قابل‌توجه است که داده‌های مطالعه‌ام نشان می‌دهد که اعضای زن خانواده‌ها تمایل بیشتری به شرکت در مصاحبه‌ها و مشارکت در پژوهش داشتند، چرا که پیامدهای این تحقیق را برای آینده خود سودمند می‌دیدند.

هم‌زمان با گرامیداشت روز جهانی زن، لازم می‌دانم که این یافته‌ها را برجسته کنم. صدای زنان در شکل‌دهی سیاست‌های فراگیر، تقویت همکاری‌های خانواده و مدرسه، و بهبود دسترسی به منابع آموزشی برای دانش‌آموزان دارای ناتوانی بسیار حیاتی است. شناسایی و پرداختن به این تجربیات جنسیتی، گامی اساسی در جهت تحقق عدالت آموزشی و فراتر از آن است.
