A short review on “Learning Challenges for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Students With Disabilities” (Dr.Soraya Fallah, Dr. Bronte Reynolds, Dr. Wendy Murawski )
The newly published book, Learning Challenges for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Students with Disabilities (2020) is a reference source in the educational literature arena. College students in a credential program, PK-12 administrators, PK-14 teachers, disability organizations, school staff development trainers, educational consulting companies & initiatives, and activists for rights of education can use this book.
Annika Unander, an Intervention Teacher from a California-based school appreciates this reference textbook and after reading this book believes that it “is an important book for any educator who seeks to improve outcomes for CLD students with special needs”. She gave the following review:
“The US has the enormous privilege and challenge of educating a uniquely diverse population. We are at a crossroads in our nation when facing social and racial justice within our country’s systems. There is a growing consensus that we are not doing enough to support the most vulnerable populations, including children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in our educational system. If we truly believe that every child in the US should be afforded a quality and effective education, then we must educate ourselves about the needs of our culturally and linguistically diverse students. Learning Challenges for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Students with Disabilities is an important book for any educator who seeks to improve outcomes for CLD students with special needs. As a teacher who works primarily with CLD students, I’ve come to appreciate the need to build an empathic and trusting relationship with these children. This text reinforces my effort in that regard. It is incredibly thorough and well researched. The future of change within the educational system begins with understanding the needs of these students. I believe this text should be a primary resource for any institution that is preparing the future leaders of education and special education”.
As the professor of the School of Education, Dr. Shartriya Collier stated, this book “can potentially serve as a roadmap for us to gain a greater understanding of how to draw upon the community assets and resources that make this group unique. Generations of educators and counselors now understand that these resources can be utilized to literally transform family trees, specifically though education (Pk-20 and beyond)”.
