Support Women in International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, adapting Pakhshan Azizi
Today, November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, I stand before you to raise awareness of an urgent and heartbreaking issue: the oppression and violence faced by women globally, and the specific case of Pakhshan Azizi.
I am Dr. Soraya Fallah, a researcher, women’s rights activist, and advocate. Pakhshan Azizi is a humanitarian social worker and civil society activist from Iran’s marginalized Kurdish community, now at risk of execution. Her story represents the systemic violence faced by women, particularly in repressive regimes.
In 2023, Pakhshan was arrested at her family home in Tehran. While her family members were eventually released, she was taken to Evin Prison on unfounded charges. Despite dedicating her life to helping refugees and victims of violence in Syria’s Rojava region since 2015, she now faces a lengthy prison sentence and the threat of execution after an unjust trial.
Her only “crime” was her humanitarian work—a lifeline for those suffering the horrors of ISIS’s violence. Yet, Iranian authorities use baseless accusations to silence women like Pakhshan, Sharifeh Mohammadi, and Verisheh Moradi, who risk their lives for justice and peace. This systemic oppression must end.
The death penalty is a tool of fear and repression, incompatible with justice. Today, I call on the International Federation of Social Workers, global human rights organizations, and every individual who values freedom and dignity to stand united for Pakhshan Azizi and all women unjustly imprisoned. Let us demand their release and the abolition of the death penalty in Iran.
Ending violence against women is not a local issue—it is a global cause. As a mobilizer for human rights, I urge you to raise your voices, amplify this message, and join the campaign against violence, repression, and execution. Together, we can be the voice of the voiceless, ensuring that no woman stands alone in the fight for freedom and justice.
